I heard of one university where a husband and wife were enrolled in the same program. They were always separated into different sections with different faculty, which seemed like a reasonable course of action at the time. After they'd gotten through about a half dozen courses, someone realized they were submitting the same work for assignments. One of the deans took a look through the history, and through the entire program, the husband had been submitting his work a few minutes after his wife, always duplicating her content. No one had caught it because they'd never had the same instructor.

When confronted, the husband was a real gem. He completely threw his wife under the bus, claiming that she was copying from him. He said he was the one always doing all the work, so he should get his degree and she should get kicked out of the school. Doesn't he sound like a sweet guy?

Well all righty then! : ) One person had signed up for just about every course we have but, he'd always drop one and ask to be put into another one for "next time". I got him and was getting his emails about how he hated the work, excuses for this or that and in exasperaton talked to KS at PLS. A-ha! Now we get the full story. Seems he played this game to have his superiors think he was enrolled in all these classes because he was on remediation! Based on how the guy wrote and his diatribes that said nothing about the material, I could see why he was on remediation and I suggested that he needed to drop. I passed my letter by the head honcho and it was approved. That was one of the final nails in a coffin that caused PLS to disallow but one transfer of $$$ to another course. Seems he owed a bazillion bucks to us too.

Let's see - how about the one who disagreed with everything about research? Loved that guy. Never happened to him so it didn't and couldn't happen - period. Dropped. Another one just wrote stream-of-conscious type things that had nothing to do with the material. When I graded, I was unfair, uninformed, etc. Dropped! Whatever. : ) Or how 'bout the one who thought we asked too much of them? Or wanted to write the way "it came to me"? Or the best is knowing that many don't read anything - especially directions. Really now, would you admit that in a post? More later!

I had a student from another land who posted work to a forum that just looked too familar to me. I searched for the other post I was sure it was from and lo and behold, that person had taken entire sentences from another participant's post! (You could tell not only from the words themselves, but also from the time stamps.) I followed our procedures and after confirmation from above, notified the student that I suspected plagarism. In a note back to me, the student had said s/he had written the same thing for another course and provided me with it. On a whim, I asked to be able to see the work she has submitted for the other course right in the course and by gosh, by golly, the person had done the same thing there!! Whole sentences were lifted! I took the severity of the issue to the university's Academic Integrity Officer. He asked me what I thought the student's grade should be and I said, "Failure". I don't know the final dispensation but I'm sure the student was dropped from the university's program and rightfully so.
